Letter to Rhonda
Written latter part of Dec. 1979
By: Jo Smith
To my sweet little Rhonda
Happy birthday, my sweet little girl.
Each day of your sixteen years, my heart for you has grown fonder.
Even though other people’s meddling has this past year kept us apart
There has not been a moment you were not living in my heart.
Was it only 16 years ago God gave you to me?
The years have flown so swiftly by, as you can see.
It seems only yesterday you sat on my knee
And now you are a young woman and have to be free.
It’s always so hard, as only a Mother knows, to let one go.
It’s hard to write this for the tears have started to flow.
Only God knows the pain I have known
Because of the empty place since you have gone.
Forgive me, my darling, if I have hurt thee.
And please try to understand I never meant it to be.
Someday in God’s wonderful land, we will walk together again.
And not cause each other needless grief and pain.
For then we will both understand and know
How to let our love for each other show.
Morning after morn, I stood and watched
As you walked toward the bus
And anxiously awaited for your return back home to us.
My heart and eyes hungrily drank in the sight of you
As the dry earth drinks the morning dew.
But maybe this is something you never knew?
And how my heart has ached and yearned
For the love that from me has turned
To go another way, for a time
Until God sends my little girl back to these arms of mine.
God works in mysterious ways His wonders to perform and show.
Someday your understanding will open and you will come to know
That one who lives for God must sometimes do things hard to be understood.
But after awhile it will be plain to see the it was only for your good.
For God so loved the World that He gave his only begotten Son to die.
As you ponder this, you can plainly see why
Love is not always a soft and easy road
But many times it becomes a very heavy load.
Those whom the Father chastens not are bastards and not sons.
So you see, those who are made to suffer are really the ones who are loved and cared for a lot.
Those who are pampered and spoiled and allowed to have their own way
Are the ones who are not loved and will someday have dearly to pay.
So when People with vain words try to deceive you
If God’s word and this great truth you will cleave to
They will not be able to turn you out of the way.
And you will be able to stand and boldly say.
God loves me and so does my Mother.
